Do they have a special event coming up? It could be a friend’s birthday or a bigger occasion like a family holiday. Try to avoid adding to the toy clutter and think about what they can benefit from.

Consider their age and development. Is there a gift that they can share? Group play is important for kids, especially at a young age. Remember that toys are designed for kids to learn, not just play. If you can strike the balance between the two, you can’t go wrong. The toy doesn’t necessarily have to be something they need now. Lego, bikes and blackboards are items that can be treasured for many years to come.

And if you’re still stuck for ideas, buy a book. They don’t take up much space and are an item that can be passed onto the next generations – or kept as a memory of their childhood.
