Take the stress out of starting school with our back to school check list.

Preparing for your little one to start school can be daunting. They still seem too little to be taking this big step.

Preparation is key to making the transition into starting school easy for both kids and parents.

Have a look at our school starting tips and school essentials checklist.

Tips for starting school:

Let kids use drink bottles, lunch boxes and lunch bags a few times before school starts. This helps little ones become familiar with them to reduce stress on the first day. You can also let them help pack lunch or choose their favourite lunch and snack items for food security on their first day.

Some school playgrounds are accessible outside school hours. This is a great way for your child to have a play and become familiar with the school yard.

Check if your school has a playgroup. This builds confidence in their surroundings and can help them make new friends before school starts. You can also meet other parents and go on the school journey together.

Many schools have a parents facebook group or parents app so you can join the community of other parents to get helpful information about your specific school.

Have a change of clothes in the bottom of your child’s school bag in case of any accidents or messy play. Make sure they know they are there, in case they want to change discretely. A small plastic bag for soiled clothes can also be helpful.

Most public schools, the official school uniform is not mandatory. If you choose to, you can buy plain polo shirts, pants, shorts & jumpers in your school colours which work out a lot cheaper.

If buying generic school clothes instead of official uniforms get winter clothes at the beginning of the year with summer clothes. It can be hard to find winter school clothes mid year when shops are no longer stocking back to school items.

Take the stress out of starting school with our school essentials list

  • Lunch box: bento boxes make lunch easier for little ones by giving them options in an easy layout. *most schools now have a set eating time in the classroom before recess & lunch playtime.
  • Snack box: A smaller lunch box for morning break makes it easier for children to negotiate which foods to eat at each break time. Perfect for fruit break/sip & crunch.
  • Insulated lunch bag: Keep lunch fresh in the warmer weather with and insulated lunch bag and a freezable chill pack.
  • Drink bottle: look for an option that doesn’t leak and is easy for little ones to open and refill throughout the day. 500-600mls is a popular size for junior primary. Insulated drink bottles will keep water cool on hot summer days and tend to hold up better from a few drops.
  • Backpack: Check your chosen backpack is big enough for lunch and a change of clothes plus any school work coming home. *Private schools have a uniform backpack purchased from the school uniform shop.
  • Bag tag: makes your child’s bag easily identified and is fun for decorating.
  • Labels: Stick on labels work well for both lunch items and clothes. Label everything!
  • Hat: buy multiple, trust me they are likely to go missing.
  • Uniforms: avoid mid week washing by buying 5 of each uniforms item.

Good luck to you and your little one on your school journey.
