Learning Benefits of Musical Toys

There is no doubt that music is universally loved by people of all ages. Whatever type of music you enjoy it has the power to take you on rollercoaster emotion ride.

Babies & Children are no different. Music can bring them just as much joy, perhaps more than it does to adults.

Have you ever watched as a toddler bobs up and down or sways to the rhythm of a Wiggles song. Seen a preschooler jump around in excitement when the Gummy Bear song is played. Or viewed Primary School kids try to break dance to their favourite songs.

The power of music is inside all of us and nurturing it from a young age can help child development.

By making music children can have tons of fun while developing important skills.

Did you know that playing with musical instruments can encourage development in the following areas?

Fine Motor Skills

Using hands to hold musical instruments such as shakers, bells and drumsticks strengthens hand muscles, supporting fine motor skill development. These skills will come in handy for colouring and later drawing and writing.

Gross Motor Skills

Musical play encourages body movement through swaying, bobbing, and dancing. These movements strengthen the core and body muscles, helping with body movements like walking, running, and balancing.

Creative Exploration

Give a child a drum and see what they do.

The answer is most likely they beat the drum with the drumstick. But they won’t just hit the drum once and move on. They will hit it hard, soft, in different places. They will explore the different sounds they can achieve. This is learning cause and effect, “what happens if I do this”.

You will find similar effects with other musical instruments.

To an adult an egg shaker or maraca seems simple. You shake it and it makes a soft noise. Whereas a child is likely to explore the different noises. What happens if you shake it soft? If you shake it rougher? If it’s close to your ear? Or further away? Does it sound different if you tap it on the carpet compared to the table?

This exploration builds self-confidence and decision-making skills.

Maths Skills

Ok this one seems strange, but bear with me.

There are now studies to suggest that there is a connection between music play and early learning maths skills. Through music children can increase their counting ability and pattern recognition. Amazing!

Emotional Development

Musical play gives children an outlet for self-expression, being able to express their own emotions through the music in a fun way. This can help to regulate emotions.
